ARCTIC FOX

Vulpes lagopus

Arctic foxes are remarkable animals perfectly adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth – the Arctic tundra. Their thick fur, compact bodies, and resourceful behaviors make them fascinating to observe and learn about.

Habitat and Range

Arctic foxes are found in the circumpolar Arctic, from Alaska to Siberia. They inhabit tundra, coastal areas, and pack ice regions. Their compact bodies, small ears, and fur-covered paws help them conserve heat and navigate icy terrains.

Colour-changing Coats

Arctic foxes are famous for their seasonal fur changes. In winter, their coats are thick and white, providing camouflage in snowy landscapes. In summer, they molt to a thinner, brown or grey coat that blends with the tundra's rocky terrain.

Threats

Arctic fox populations are currently stable overall, but certain subspecies, like the Scandinavian Arctic fox, face threats from climate change and competition with red foxes, whose range is expanding northward.
